What's ransomware?
Fraudsters use ransomware to encrypt files on your device. They send phishing (email spam campaigns) and spear phishing (targeted attacks) emails to trick you into downloading an email attachment containing ransomware. Downloading and installing ransomware encrypts the files, databases and applications on your device, and blocks you from using them. Fraudsters then demand a ransom so you can regain access to your information.
- Be diligent and don't open suspicious email attachments
- Be sure to have all critical files backed up on a separate drive or server
- Change your passwords regularly and make them difficult to guess
- Provide employees with only the required information needed to complete their work. Restrict privileged or critical information and follow a procedure to grant access.
- Use only secure connections to the internet and avoid public Wi-Fi networks
